Topic 5: Why it Matters: The Importance of Conducting a Community Needs Assessment
A needs assessment involves more than simply collecting and analyzing data. The Targeting Autism white paper suggests that a needs assessment not only aids in improving library services, but also helps you identify what resources, programs, and services already exist in your community. This involves identifying stakeholders and gaps in services that exist. The purpose of a needs assessment is to find out what is already being done as well as what is not being done. It is important not to waste time or effort duplicating something that another organization already offers in your community.
The following are questions to ask as you conduct your needs assessment:
- Who are your stakeholders?
- With whom could you partner?
- What is already being done?
- What is not being done?
- What resources exist in the community?
- What resources does your library already have?
- What is your library already doing that can be adapted to serve the autism community?
