Understanding Common Disabilities

In order to best serve the learning and information needs of students with disabilities, it is essential that librarians understand the common characteristics of the disability and empathize with their perspectives. This topic provides a broad overview of specific disabilities that you are most likely to encounter in your library, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger's syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, visual and hearing impairments, and physical disabilities. At several points, video simulations and activities depicting the attributes of these disabilities will be provided in order to help you better understand the mindset of your students. A glossary of essential terms provides you with a comprehensive resource to understand disabilities.
