Throughout this Topic we have explored the struggles the autism community faces when seeking and sustaining employment. There are significant employment gaps due to transportation issues, lack of representation in corporate diversity and inclusion programs, and social/emotional or self-worth struggles characteristic of individuals with autism.

Employers may be hesitant to hire individuals with autism, fearful they will not be able to accommodate them in the workplace. However, in reality accommodations are quite easy and inexpensive. People with autism bring special skills and attention to the workplace, benefiting their employer by displaying honesty, integrity, attention to detail, and creativity.

Within this Topic you have explored training opportunities designed to prepare people with autism for the workplace, as well as training opportunities for employers and librarians. As librarians, it is important to know how we can help people with autism find these opportunities and find employment in their community.

As discussed throughout this Topic, a great place to start helping individuals with autism is to provide opportunities within the library. Their skills and abilities are greatly appreciated in the library community and individuals can use their talents in various library tasks while also learning how to be successful in the workplace. The resources provided in this Topic all relate to employment and autism and are included within the Targeting Autism Resource Database.
