Topic 5: Summary

Throughout this Topic you have seen what a community needs assessment involves and how powerful it can be in transforming the accessibility in your library for patrons with autism. A community needs assessment not only reveals what actions influence your library, but also where your library services may be lacking. Collecting and analyzing community data can be done in a number of ways, and identifying stakeholders is essential in the data collection process.

This can be a daunting process if the library does not have proper support involving community partners, such as local organizations, businesses, schools, etc. which can add perspective, funding, and support in many other areas. Reach out to the community to find potential partners and/or visit the Autism Speaks' outstanding resource, Community and Support Network database. The link gives an example of what is available in New York, but you may search any state and then enter your zip code to find local organizations linked to Autism near you!

You have also explored a variety of other resources available to librarians serving patrons with autism and their families. These resources focus on community involvement and patron accessibility, professional development opportunities, as well as college and career readiness. While these resources are extremely valuable, they only skim the surface of the vast amount of information available regarding autism.
